![]() ![]() We all compartmentalise to some extent: you’re a different person at work than you are at home, a different person with your family than with acquaintances. ![]() What is it about that personality type that interested you? It’s not Madoff’s story but your protagonist, Jonathan Alkaitis, is a very similar character. And here was this fabulously wealthy conman who’d been gambling with retirement savings. There was such popular rage directed against him because we thought our economies were solid and it turned out to be something of a house of cards. Madoff almost seemed like the embodiment of that era. The Glass Hotel is not about Bernie Madoff or his staff, his family or his investors. In particular, I was fascinated by the Bernie Madoff story. It’s a period in recent history that I remember so vividly. Why was that a period you wanted to explore? ![]() The Glass Hotel centres on the 2008 financial crash. ![]() From what I've seen of the movie so far though, they're using a lot of the book in the movie - Crossbones (one of Red Skull's lieutenants), the Falcon (one of Cap's old friends), certain scenes like Bucky punching Cap's shield with his mechanical arm - but it doesn't look like Hugo Weaving's returning as Red Skull so, even though he's in the book, he probably won't be in the film.īut enough talk of the movie! The book is awesome, so even if the film winds up sucking next year, at least we have Brubaker and Epting's great Cap story. ![]() Unlike the movie though, the plot centres around an evil Russian general and the cosmic cube taking over the world through purchasing American land, which works really well in the book but I don't see ANOTHER Cap movie centring around the cosmic cube so I expect that plot element to be jettisoned. ![]() ![]() Steve Epting's art is ridiculous - it's just so good! And his character design of the Winter Soldier is brilliant, with the mechanical arm and neo-terrorist look being faithfully replicated in the upcoming movie. Originally dead from an explosion over the English Channel pursuing the evil Baron Zemo during WW2, Brubaker imagines Bucky surviving the blast and being turned into a cyborg assassin, brainwashed into fighting for the Russians. ![]() Ed Brubaker revisits Cap's past by writing an alternate history to his sidekick, Bucky, in The Winter Soldier. ![]() ![]() THE TWIG TRILOGY, Book I When thirteen-year-old Twig discovers. ![]() So lucky to have seen him sketch in person. Read Edge Chronicles: Beyond the Deepwoods by Paul Stewart available from Rakuten Kobo. So I’m very grateful for these incredible illustrations. Honestly, without them I have no idea how these fantastical creatures would be imagined in my head. It’s been years since I read it the first few times, and I’m extremely lucky to have met one of the authors and the illustrator, Chris Riddell □ He’s so charismatic and I can totally see him imagining and creating this world with Paul Stewart. ![]() And the same moments stand out to me every time.
